IDENTITY CRISIS: Mark Zuckerberg sues Meta over mistaken identity account bans

IDENTITY CRISIS: Mark Zuckerberg sues Meta over mistaken identity account bans

Indianapolis bankruptcy attorney Mark S. Zuckerberg has filed a lawsuit against Meta, the parent company of Facebook, alleging negligence and breach of contract due to repeated suspensions of his Facebook accounts.

The attorney, who shares a name with Meta’s founder Mark E. Zuckerberg, claims his accounts have been disabled multiple times for “impersonating a celebrity” or using a “fake name,” despite his legitimate identity and significant advertising expenditure on the platform.

The lawyer is suing Meta for negligence and breach of contract after his Facebook business and personal accounts were repeatedly suspended for allegedly “impersonating a celebrity” or using a “fake name.”

The lawsuit, filed in Marion County Superior Court on September 2, 2025, seeks damages, the return of advertising money, and attorney fees.

The attorney’s business page, “Bankruptcy Law Office of Mark S. Zuckerberg,” has been suspended four times, and his personal page five times, totaling nine suspensions.

These suspensions have occurred despite Zuckerberg spending at least $11,000 on Facebook advertisements to promote his law practice. He argues that these suspensions have directly impacted his business by preventing potential clients from finding him and negating the benefit of his advertising dollars. Zuckerberg likened it to “buying space on a billboard, them taking your money and then throwing a giant blanket over it”.

Meta has acknowledged the error, with a spokesperson stating, “We have reinstated Mark Zuckerberg’s account after finding it had been disabled in error. We appreciate Mr. Zuckerberg’s continued patience on this issue and are working to try and prevent this from happening in the future”.

However, Zuckerberg is proceeding with the lawsuit, citing a lack of patience due to the recurring nature of the problem and the lengthy appeals process, which has sometimes taken months to resolve. He has been forced to submit various forms of identification, including his birth certificate, driver’s license, and credit card, along with video images of his face, to regain access to his accounts.

Sharing a name with the tech billionaire has caused numerous other issues for Mark S. Zuckerberg beyond Facebook account suspensions. He has been sued by the state of Washington due to mistaken identity, receives a flood of calls from people demanding Facebook tech support, and has been inundated with calls and emails from strangers due to Facebook scams promising money from “Mark Zuckerberg”.

He also reports constant hacking attempts on his Facebook account, daily friend requests from strangers, and even death threats and harassment on Messenger intended for the Meta CEO These incidents are detailed on his personal website, iammarkzuckerberg.com.

Zuckerberg expressed frustration that a company as technologically advanced as Meta cannot implement safeguards to prevent these recurring issues.

He told WTHR, “I’ve got better things to do than sue Facebook. And they have more money and more lawyers and more resources than I do. I’d rather not pick a fight with them, but I don’t know how else to make them stop”.
