Illegal mining linked to increased school dropouts in Plateau, says Governor Mutfwang

Illegal mining linked to increased school dropouts in Plateau, says Governor Mutfwang

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has highlighted a significant issue regarding illegal mining activities and their detrimental effects on education within the state.

He has stated that these activities are a major contributing factor to the rising school dropout rates in various communities, particularly in local government areas such as Bassa, Riyom, Jos South, and Barkin Ladi.

The Plateau State governor’s concerns stem from research conducted by his administration, which revealed that many young individuals have abandoned their education to engage in illegal mining.

This shift in focus from schooling to mining has resulted in classrooms being nearly empty, indicating a severe decline in school enrolment and attendance. The alarming trend is compounded by reports of child labor, where parents are sending their children into the workforce instead of allowing them to pursue their education.

In response to this crisis, Governor Mutfwang has called upon community and religious leaders to assist the government in addressing the issue.

The Plateau State governor emphasized the importance of unity among citizens and urged leaders to educate their communities about the long-term consequences of illegal mining. The governor reassured the public that efforts to combat illegal mining are not intended to deprive individuals of their livelihoods but rather to protect the future of children and preserve the environment.

Furthermore, he pointed out that illegal mining poses serious environmental hazards such as land degradation and destabilization of residential areas. These factors not only threaten educational opportunities but also jeopardize the overall well-being of communities involved in such activities.

To tackle these challenges effectively, Governor Mutfwang has initiated raids on illegal mining camps across Plateau State and plans to launch an extensive awareness campaign aimed at educating citizens about the dangers associated with illegal mining practices. His administration is committed to working closely with religious institutions and community leaders to foster a collaborative approach toward sustainable development.
