Kano residents lament poor internet, call services

Residents of Kano State have expressed significant dissatisfaction with the quality of internet and call services provided by major telecommunications networks in the area.

This discontent has been voiced through various interviews, highlighting the severe impact that these service deficiencies have had on daily life and business operations.

Subscribers reported that unreliable internet and call services led to serious inconveniences, including missing important travel arrangements. Their experiences underscore a broader issue where poor connectivity can disrupt critical activities, such as business communications and personal commitments.

The frustration is palpable among users who rely heavily on these services for both personal and professional purposes.

Business concerns

Business owners, such as Abubakar Isah, have also raised alarms about frequent connection failures and fluctuating network quality. These issues not only hinder day-to-day operations but also threaten the viability of businesses that depend on stable communication channels. Isah’s comments reflect a growing sentiment that telecom providers are neglecting their responsibilities to ensure reliable service for their subscribers.

There is a strong call from residents for intervention by regulatory bodies like the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Ahmed Nuhu, an internet café operator, articulated this need by urging regulators to step in and address what he described as “telecom providers’ oppression.” This highlights a perceived lack of accountability among service providers, which many believe should be addressed by regulatory oversight.

The general sentiment among residents is one of anger towards telecom operators, who they feel prioritize profits over customer satisfaction. Maryam Adamu, a school teacher, emphasized this point by stating that Nigerians are frustrated with the current state of services. Her remarks suggest that there is an expectation for telecom companies to improve their offerings significantly in response to consumer grievances.

Recent developments

Adding to the turmoil, MTN’s head office in Kano was recently shut down amid protests from customers seeking assistance with blocked SIM cards due to ongoing issues related to the National Identification Number (NIN) linkage process. The closure led to chaotic scenes where police had to intervene using teargas to disperse crowds at the outlet. This incident illustrates not only the immediate frustrations of consumers but also reflects deeper systemic issues within Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape.
