Kwara teacher suffers demotion for assaulting corps member

The Kwara State government has taken disciplinary action against a schoolteacher, Mrs. Fatimoh Hamzat, following an incident where she assaulted a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member at the Government Day Junior Secondary School in Kulende, Ilorin.

This incident occurred when the corps member visited the school to collect her clearance letter and was reportedly assaulted and stripped by some teachers for allegedly failing to greet them properly.

Investigation and findings

An investigative panel was established by the state government to look into the matter. The panel found Mrs. Hamzat guilty of several offenses including fighting on duty, using foul language, insubordination, and disrespecting the national identity represented by the corps members’ uniform. These actions were deemed to contravene public service rules.

Sanctions

As a result of these findings, the Kwara State government announced that Mrs. Hamzat would be demoted by two grade levels and transferred out of her current position at the school. Additionally, she is required to undergo counseling sessions as part of her punishment. The government expressed deep regret over her behavior and reassured both the NYSC management and the public that such conduct does not reflect the values of Kwara State.

Withdrawal of NYSC members

In response to this incident, the NYSC temporarily withdrew all corps members from both junior and senior arms of the school to protect them from potential further harm. This decision was confirmed by Oladipo Morakinyo, NYSC State Public Relations Officer.

The Kwara State government emphasized its commitment to ensuring that such incidents do not recur in the future. They urged teachers in the state to adhere strictly to established procedures and laws while performing their duties. Furthermore, they reiterated their dedication to improving training on teaching ethics and service standards for educators within the state.

The overall message from this incident is clear: abuse of any kind will not be tolerated in educational institutions in Kwara State, reflecting a commitment to maintaining respect and professionalism within schools.
