LEAGUE OF NORTHERN DEMOCRATS: Shekarau explains formation, strategy

The League of Northern Democrats was formed as a response to the pressing challenges facing Northern Nigeria.

According to Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, the former governor of Kano State and interim chairman of the group, the formation was driven by a collective desire among like-minded individuals from the North to influence political decisions and leadership recruitment at all levels in Nigeria.

Shekarau stated this on Tuesday when he led the group on a visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

He said the group emerged following extensive consultations and discussions over a period of three months, culminating in its establishment with a membership base of 400.

He disclosed that the group, which has a membership of 400, came into existence three months ago as a result of various consultations and discussions.

The primary objective of the League is to address critical issues affecting the North, including insecurity, poverty, illiteracy, and unemployment. Shekarau emphasized that these challenges have been exacerbated by a lack of credible leadership and political unity within the region. The League aims to foster solidarity among its members and prioritize political unity in order to reposition Northern Nigeria as a significant force in the country’s political landscape.

Strategic initiatives

To achieve its goals, the League plans to convene strategic summits and engage with key stakeholders across various sectors.

This includes reaching out to former heads of state, vice presidents, military leaders, and other influential figures in Northern Nigeria. By doing so, they aim to garner support for their initiatives and create a comprehensive document outlining regional aspirations that can be presented to politicians seeking votes.

He added that the League’s commitment extends beyond mere political engagement, as it seeks to advocate for good governance and sustainable development in Northern Nigeria. The group recognizes that addressing issues such as education reform and security improvements is essential for long-term progress. Furthermore, it aims to hold current leaders accountable while mobilizing resources across political affiliations for collective action.
