NCC gives final deadline for NIN-SIM linkage compliance

NCC gives final deadline for NIN-SIM linkage compliance

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has set a definitive deadline for the linkage of National Identity Numbers (NINs) with Subscriber Identity Modules (SIMs). This deadline is September 14, 2024. The NCC has emphasized that this date marks the final opportunity for all Nigerians to ensure their SIMs are linked to their NINs.

As of now, over 153 million SIMs have been successfully linked to NINs, which represents a compliance rate of 96 percent. This figure indicates significant progress from a compliance rate of 69.7 percent recorded in January 2024. The NCC is urging all citizens who have not yet completed this process or who have encountered issues during verification to act promptly.

The linkage of SIMs to NINs is crucial for enhancing the security and trustworthiness of Nigeria’s digital economy. By verifying mobile users, this policy aims to reduce fraud and cybercrime risks while promoting participation in e-commerce, digital banking, and mobile money services. This initiative is expected to foster financial inclusion and stimulate economic growth.

The NCC has also highlighted its commitment to combating the sale of pre-registered SIM cards, which poses a threat to national security and the integrity of mobile numbers in Nigeria. The commission has warned that engaging in the sale or purchase of such SIMs is a criminal offense punishable by imprisonment and fines.

Effective from September 15, 2024, it is anticipated that no SIM operating in Nigeria will be without a valid NIN. Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) have been directed to complete the verification and linkage process by this date.

NCC’s announcement underscores the urgency for all Nigerians to link their SIM cards with their NINs before the impending deadline.
