Nigeria among top 50 countries for TikTok content violations
In the third quarter of 2024, TikTok reported significant enforcement actions regarding its community guidelines, revealing that Nigeria is among the top 50 countries contributing to content policy violations.
Specifically, Nigeria accounted for 2.1 million of the 147.8 million videos removed globally during this period.
This statistic highlights the ongoing challenges TikTok faces in maintaining a safe and compliant platform.
The removal of videos is part of TikTok’s strategy to uphold its community standards, which emphasize integrity, privacy, safety, and mental health.

According to TikTok’s Community Guidelines Enforcement report, approximately 90% of all material removals occurred in the top 50 markets where violations were documented.
This indicates a concentrated effort to address issues in regions with higher incidences of non-compliance and content policy violations
Types of content violations
The types of content that were removed typically violated several key areas outlined in TikTok’s policies, including integrity and authenticity; privacy and security; mental and behavioral health; safety and civility.
These categories reflect the platform’s commitment to creating a safe environment for users while addressing harmful or misleading content arising from content policy violations
Account removals and fraud prevention
In addition to video removals, TikTok took extensive measures against fraudulent accounts during this quarter. The platform deleted a total of 214.8 million accounts, which included 187.3 million accounts identified as fake; 24.3 million accounts suspected to be owned by users under the age of 13 and an additional 3.2 million accounts removed for unspecified reasons.
This proactive approach underscores TikTok’s vigilance against external threats aimed at manipulating engagement metrics on their platform.
Engagement metrics affected
TikTok also reported substantial deletions concerning user content policy violations. This includes 1.3 billion comments that were deleted from videos, the suspension of 12.2 million live sessions and the elimination of 57.2 million fraudulent followers.
Additionally, it removed around 1.1 billion video likes, which were found to originate from automated or inauthentic mechanisms.
These actions are indicative of TikTok’s ongoing battle against artificial inflation of popularity through deceptive practices.
Advertising policy compliance
Interestingly, during this reporting period, there was a noted decline in the number of ads removed for violating advertising rules compared to previous quarters. This suggests that either advertisers are becoming more compliant with TikTok’s guidelines or that enforcement measures have become more effective.
