Nigerian Senate, Attorney General to commence review of tax reform bills today

The Nigerian Senate has taken significant steps regarding the controversial Tax Reform Bills that have been a source of public agitation and political debate.

The Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, announced that the Senate has constituted a special committee to meet with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) to address contentious issues surrounding these bills. This meeting is scheduled for today, the 5th day of December, 2024 as part of an effort to resolve various concerns raised by lawmakers and stakeholders across the country.

The Tax Reform Bills in question include several key pieces of legislation aimed at restructuring Nigeria’s tax system. These bills have faced criticism from various quarters, particularly from northern governors who argue that certain provisions are detrimental to their states. The National Economic Council has also recommended that these bills be withdrawn for further consultations, indicating widespread discomfort with some aspects of the proposed reforms.

In response to these controversies, the Senate has paused further action on the bills until after today’s meeting with the AGF. This decision reflects a commitment to ensuring that all voices are heard and that any legislative changes made will be in the best interest of national unity and economic stability. The committee led by Senator Abba Moro will engage with the AGF and other stakeholders to discuss these issues comprehensively.

The outcome of this meeting could significantly influence how the Tax Reform Bills are shaped moving forward, potentially leading to amendments or even a complete withdrawal of certain provisions deemed problematic. The Senate’s approach emphasizes dialogue and consensus-building as essential components in addressing complex legislative matters.

The Senate on Wednesday constituted a committee headed by the Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South) to meet with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) today, to address the contentious issues associated with the tax reform bills which have generated various concerns across the country.

The Deputy Senate President, Barau I. Jibrin (APC, Kano North), who presided over plenary said that the Senate panel and the AGF would meet today (Thursday) in Abuja.

Senator Barau said all sides would be given the opportunity to ventilate their feelings after which the meeting would arrive at a rational conclusion.
