Nigerian Senate explains delay in investigating Natasha’s allegations against Akpabio

Nigerian Senate explains delay in investigating Natasha’s allegations against Akpabio

The Senate in Nigeria has said it has not yet initiated a probe into the allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for several reasons

One of the primary reasons cited by some factions within the Senate is the absence of a formal petition submitted to the Senate’s Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions Committee. Without a formal complaint, there is a belief that it would be inappropriate or unnecessary to launch an investigation into the allegations.

Speaking on ARISE TV on Monday, the Chairman Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Senator Yemi Adaramodu (APC, Ekiti South), said Akpabio can’t be probed by the Senate without a petition against him.

Meanwhile, the Citizens Network For Peace and Development in Nigeria (CNPD) has publicly urged the Senate to concentrate on its legislative responsibilities rather than diverting attention to what they consider unproven allegations. They argue that pursuing these claims could distract from essential legislative work and responsibilities.

Some voices within the Senate suggest that the timing of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s accusations may be strategic, potentially aimed at deflecting attention from her own disciplinary issues within the Senate. This perspective posits that her allegations might serve as a means to escape scrutiny for her actions during Senate proceedings.

There is also an emphasis on adhering to due process within the Senate’s internal mechanisms. Some senators believe that any investigation should follow established protocols and guidelines, which include having formal complaints and evidence before proceeding with inquiries into such serious allegations.

The political dynamics surrounding this issue cannot be overlooked. The relationship between Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan appears strained, particularly following disciplinary actions taken against her by Akpabio. This context raises questions about whether her allegations stem from genuine grievances or are influenced by political motivations.

Despite these reasons for delay, various groups, including civil society organizations like Afenifere and CNPP, have called for an independent investigation into the matter to ensure transparency and accountability in governance.

They argue that public office holders must uphold ethical standards and that any serious allegation should be thoroughly investigated regardless of political implications.
