Police investigate El-Rufai, ADC officials for alleged mischief in Kaduna

Police investigate El-Rufai, ADC officials for alleged mischief in Kaduna

The Kaduna State Police Command has summoned former Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and seven other prominent members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for questioning regarding alleged criminal conspiracy, incitement of public disturbance, mischief, and causing grievous hurt.

The police letter, dated September 4, 2025, and signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Uzainu Abdullahi of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), directed the ADC Kaduna State Chairman to produce El-Rufai and the others at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) on September 8, 2025.

The individuals listed in the police invitation alongside El-Rufai are Bashir Sa’idu, Jafaru Sani, Ubaidullah Mohammed (popularly known as “30”), Nasiru Maikano, Aminu Abita, and Ahmed Rufa’i Hussaini (also known as “Mikiya”).

The invitation stems from allegations lodged against them by complainants, though the specific details of these complaints remain unclear. The police emphasized that this action is part of ongoing investigation activities aimed at maintaining public peace and order in the state.

This development follows a series of events, including the sealing of the ADC office at No. 4 Ali Akilu Road, Kaduna, by security operatives on September 4, 2025, just hours before the Northwest leadership of the party was scheduled to visit. This visit was intended to commiserate with members who were reportedly attacked by political thugs the previous week. Eyewitnesses reported that police patrol vans were deployed around the premises to block access to the opposition party’s office.

Last week, a group of thugs attacked a transition meeting of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the ADC in Kaduna town, injuring several people and damaging property, including El-Rufai’s vehicle.

This coalition meeting was reportedly held under El-Rufai’s leadership. The Kaduna State Police Command had previously blamed El-Rufai for the incident, stating he failed to notify the police and other security agencies about the meeting.

El-Rufai has reacted to the summons by accusing the state Commissioner of Police of violating the constitution, calling it a “dangerous descent into lawlessness”.

He stated that a purported court order was never legally served, and he intends to contest it in court. The Kaduna state government, through its Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Suleiman Shuaibu, accused El-Rufai of plotting to destabilize the state through provocative actions and inflammatory statements, an allegation he denies.

A chieftain of the party, Yusuf Shehu Bello, has also sued the Inspector-General of Police and the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police over alleged unlawful restrictions on political gatherings.
