Police seal Edo deputy governor’s office to prevent Shaibu’s reinstatement

Police seal Edo deputy governor’s office to prevent Shaibu’s reinstatement

The office of the deputy governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, has been sealed off by a significant police presence.

This action took place on Sunday, September 29, 2024, and is part of an ongoing conflict between Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki.

The sealing of the office occurred at the location on Osadebe Avenue in Benin City, which was previously relocated from the Government House amid rising tensions.

On Sunday, stern-looking policemen were observed at the site with a machine gun-mounted police truck stationed at the entrance. Three officers were present to enforce this closure. The entry gate to the deputy governor’s office remained closed, indicating that access to this government facility has been completely restricted.

In conjunction with this police action, staff members from the deputy governor’s office were instructed on Friday to report to a different location known as the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Agency (JOOPSA).

This move marks a significant shift in operations for those working under Shaibu. Additionally, official vehicles associated with the deputy governor’s office have been redirected to the office of the Head of Service within the Government House.

This development is set against a backdrop of escalating tensions between Philip Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki. Recently, Shaibu was reinstated as deputy governor by a Federal High Court ruling; however, there are ongoing legal challenges regarding this reinstatement.

The Edo State Government has expressed concerns about potential unrest stemming from Shaibu’s plans to enforce his reinstatement despite pending legal appeals.

The Edo State government has publicly called upon law enforcement agencies and citizens to prevent any actions that could lead to chaos or violence. They highlighted previous incidents where attempts by Shaibu led to serious consequences, including loss of life among law enforcement personnel.
