Tinubu approves owner-occupier housing scheme for judges in FCT

President Bola Tinubu has recently approved an owner-occupier housing scheme specifically designed for judges in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Nigeria.

This initiative aims to enhance the welfare and independence of judicial officers, ensuring they have secure housing that they can own upon retirement.

The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, announced this development during the groundbreaking ceremony for a project that will consist of 40 housing units located in Katampe District, Abuja.

These units are intended for judicial officers serving in various courts, including the Court of Appeal, Federal High Court, and FCT High Court. The project is significant as it represents a commitment to improving living conditions for those who serve in the judiciary.

Wike indicated that 70% of the project’s budget has already been allocated to cover not only construction but also furnishing costs. The contractor responsible for this project is expected to complete it within a timeframe of 15 months. This timeline suggests that by approximately mid-2025, these housing units should be ready for occupancy.

The approval of this housing scheme aligns with President Tinubu’s broader agenda known as the “Renewed Hope Agenda.” One key aspect emphasized by Wike is that providing judges with stable housing will help insulate them from potential interference or manipulation by other branches of government—namely, the executive and legislative arms. The idea is that when judges have secure homes and guaranteed salaries upon retirement, they can perform their duties with greater courage and independence.

Wike articulated that having a home would alleviate fears related to job security and external pressures, thereby allowing judges to focus on their responsibilities without undue influence.

In addition to the initial 40 housing units being constructed, there are plans to provide an additional 20 houses in 2025 for other judicial officers within the FCT judiciary and Industrial Court. This indicates a long-term commitment from the government to support judicial officers’ welfare further.

The land designated for these houses was previously allocated to Julius Berger but was revoked due to non-development over two decades. This decision reflects a proactive approach by the FCT Administration in utilizing available resources effectively.

Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, Chief Justice of Nigeria, praised this initiative as a significant milestone towards enhancing judicial welfare. She highlighted that a conducive living environment is essential for judicial officers to carry out their duties effectively. A supportive home environment contributes significantly to their ability to interpret and apply laws impartially.

Kekere-Ekun noted that peace of mind and security at home are crucial elements enabling judges to focus on their rigorous responsibilities without distraction or concern about their living conditions.
