Truck plunges from Lagos bridge, crushes two mini-buses below

A serious accident occurred in Lagos State on Saturday when a truck fell off the Pen Cinema flyover bridge and landed on two commercial mini-buses.

The incident took place in the Agege area of Lagos, specifically along the Old Abeokuta Road.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the accident happened at approximately 8:37 a.m. and involved not only the two mini-buses but also several other vehicles including five commercial buses and two private vehicles—a Toyota Camry and a Sienna bus

Preliminary investigations indicated that the truck was carrying two large containers when it suffered a catastrophic brake failure while traveling at high speed. As a result, the driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to the truck detaching from its load and crashing onto the vehicles below. The impact caused significant damage to both mini-buses, which are commonly referred to as “korope” in Nigeria.

The aftermath of this tragic event saw emergency responders from various agencies, including LASTMA and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), quickly mobilizing to manage the situation. They worked diligently to recover the affected vehicles and restore normal traffic flow in the area.

Casualties and Injuries

While initial reports did not confirm any fatalities or injuries, further updates revealed that at least one pedestrian was killed on-site during an earlier related incident involving another truck accident in early April. In this recent incident, however, it was reported that the driver of the truck sustained severe injuries, including compound fractures in both arms. He was promptly transported to General Hospital Ile-Epo for urgent medical care.

In response to this alarming trend of road accidents involving trucks in Lagos State—often attributed to factors such as poor vehicle maintenance, driver fatigue, speeding, reckless driving, and overloading—the General Manager of LASTMA emphasized the need for heightened vigilance among drivers. He urged all motorists to adhere strictly to road safety protocols and comply with newly installed speed-limiting devices designed to mitigate such accidents.
