Ilorin Central Jummah Mosque to build N1.1 billion student hostel at UNILORIN
The Ilorin Central Jummah Mosque Committee has announced plans to construct a 250-bed student hostel at the University of Ilorin, with an estimated cost of N1.1 billion.
This initiative aims to boost the mosque’s internally generated revenue (IGR) and ensure its financial sustainability.
The project was unveiled during the committee’s annual Board of Trustees and stakeholders’ meeting.

The Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Alhaji Shehu AbdulGafar, mentioned that a letter of intent had been submitted to the University authorities and that the 3D architectural plan was displayed in the meeting’s program brochure.
The mosque has historically relied on donations, but the committee recognizes the need for sustainable investment initiatives to secure its future.
The mosque’s monthly recurrent expenses have risen to N5.5 million due to inflation, and it faces challenges such as an erratic power supply, with monthly electricity bills exceeding N1 million. The committee is also planning to spend N100 million on procuring rugs for the main hall of the mosque.
The secretary justified the recurrent expenses, saying “Our mosque is undoubtedly one of the most magnificent religious centres in Nigeria and beyond. It deserves the kind of maintenance that will preserve its elegance and spiritual ambience.”
The Ilorin Central Jumaat Mosque Committee is led by the chairman of the board of trustees, former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Alfa Belgore. The project is designed to boost the internally generated revenue drive of the mosque committee.
