How Portugal Rep Refused to Vote Cristiano Ronaldo in 2021 Ballon d’Or Top Five
Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was snubbed by Portugal’s representative in the voting process for the 2021 Ballon d’Or.
Journalists from 180 different countries were asked to cast their votes for the top five footballers from France Football’s 30-man shortlist.
First place and second place were awarded six and four points respectively, while third place received three points, fourth picked up two points and fifth collected a single point.
Journalists voting in the Ballon d’Or were required to take into account three different criteria in their top five rankings.
One of those included individual and collective performances during the year, as well as player class (both in terms of talent and fair play) and a player’s overall career.
Ronaldo failed to make the overall top five for the Ballon d’Or and ranked in sixth place, with the Portuguese forward receiving 178 points.

The 36-year-old United forward consequently missed out on a place on the Ballon d’Or podium for the first time since 2010.
Joaquim Rita of SIC Noticias was selected to put forward Portugal’s Ballon d’Or votes and placed Chelsea star N’Golo Kante in the top spot.
Robert Lewandowski and Kylian Mbappe came second and third respectively in Rita’s rankings, while Jorginho took home fourth and Mohamed Salah was named in fifth place.
Rita snubbed both Ronaldo and Paris Saint-Germain superstar Lionel Messi from his top five picks.
