Kano govt silent as bullet hits journalist at Govt House on World Press Freedom Day

A reporter with Abubakar Rimi Television (ARTV) of Kano State was hit by a stray bullet at Kano State Government House Friday evening.

A senior management staff at ARTV confirmed to Nigerian Sketch that Naziru Idris Ya’u was hit in a circumstance that has remained unclear at the state Government House, adding that the reporter had received treatment and was doing fine as of Saturday morning.

The reporter, according to the management staff, could not explain how he got hit, and security operatives at the Government House were not able to ascertain where the bullet came from.

As bizarre as this may sound, healthcare givers at the Government House clinic, gave an opinion that the bullet may have been shot from gun somewhere far away. They said the injury sustained by the reporter was minor, suggesting that the bullet was not shot from a close range.

The stray bullet incident occurred on the day World Press Freedom Day was being celebrated all over the world.

So far, Kano State government has remained silent on the incident, refusing to offer any form of explanation.

Some journalists at the Government House, especially those working for Kano State-owned media, said the government has revealed its insensitivity to their safety cocerns.

One of them expressed worries that Naziru’s plight and government’s silence was an indication that “journalists working for Kano State government are not accorded the respect they deserve. They take us for granted, and that is so bad.”

“Police personnel stationed at the Government House have initiated a ‘thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances leading to this alarming event’, according to SolaseBase.
