Significance of the inquiry commission
The Kano State Judicial Commission of Inquiry on Political Violence and Missing Persons, if judiciously, fairly and effectively carried out, holds significant importance for several reasons:
Accountability and Justice
The commission’s primary objective is to investigate cases of political violence and missing persons that occurred between 2015 and 2023. By holding individuals accountable for these acts, the commission aims to ensure justice for the victims and their families. This pursuit of accountability is crucial for upholding the rule of law and fostering a sense of justice within the community.
Prevention of Future Violence
By delving into the root causes of political violence in Kano State, the commission seeks to identify factors that contribute to such incidents. Understanding these underlying issues can help in formulating strategies to prevent future occurrences of political violence. This proactive approach is essential for maintaining peace and stability within the state.
Transparency and Good Governance
The establishment of a commission to investigate misappropriation of public properties alongside political violence demonstrates a commitment to transparency and good governance. By uncovering instances of corruption and malpractice, the commission contributes to building trust between the government and its citizens. Transparency in governance is fundamental for fostering public confidence in institutions.
Restoration of Public Trust
Cases of political violence and missing persons often erode public trust in governmental authorities. Through a thorough investigation conducted by an independent judicial commission, there is an opportunity to restore faith in the justice system and demonstrate that no one is above the law. This restoration of public trust is vital for promoting social cohesion and unity within Kano State.
Deterrence Against Impunity
The inquiry into political violence sends a strong message that impunity will not be tolerated. By investigating past incidents rigorously and ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable, the commission serves as a deterrent against future acts of violence or misconduct. This deterrence factor plays a crucial role in maintaining law and order within the state.
