2026 WORLD CUP: FIFA forces major VAR change ahead of England vs Argentina semi-final clash

In a dramatic, last-minute move ahead of Wednesday night’s highly anticipated World Cup semi-final between England and Argentina, world football governing body FIFA has implemented a major structural change to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.

The decision comes amid mounting controversy and fierce criticism over officiating throughout the tournament.

In a significant departure from how the tournament has been run so far, FIFA has decided to place VAR officials directly on-site at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta for the semi-final clash.

Prior to this decision, VAR officials had been operating remotely from a centralized tech hub at the International Broadcast Centre in Dallas, Texas—regardless of where the matches were physically being played.

According to tournament insiders, deploying on-site VAR officials is a critical contingency measure. The move is designed to prevent any potential communication breakdowns or technical glitches during one of the biggest games of the tournament.

Speaking on the sudden shift, Dan Hunt, a member of the FIFA World Cup Organizing Committee and owner of FC Dallas, welcomed the decision.

“There’s a lot of drama that unfolds in these games. And look, when you are asking only four officials to manage what’s going on on the field, it’s very difficult on a field that’s much bigger than an American football field. I’m glad that there’s going to be on-site [VAR]. I don’t know what that communication’s going to look like.”

Why FIFA had to act

The sudden logistical U-turn is widely seen as an attempt by FIFA to restore credibility to the tournament’s officiating. Both semi-finalists have been at the center of recent VAR storms.

Despite booking their semi-final spot with a thrilling 2-1 extra-time win over Norway—thanks to a stunning brace from 23-year-old Jude Bellingham—the Three Lions were left furious when a clear penalty on Djed Spence was overturned by remote VAR officials.
The outcry reached a boiling point following Argentina’s tense 3-2 quarter-final victory over Egypt. The Egyptian FA fired off an angry, official complaint to FIFA after Mostafa Ziko’s crucial goal was disallowed by VAR, which ruled that Lisandro Martinez had been fouled earlier in the play.
By bringing the video referees directly to the stadium, FIFA hopes to streamline decision-making and minimize the communication delays that have frustrated players, managers, and fans alike.

American referee Ismail Elfath has been appointed to officiate the high-stakes semi-final.

The Matchday Officiating Team:

Center Referee: Ismail Elfath (USA)
Assistant Referees: Corey Parker & Kyle Atkins (USA)
Fourth Official: Maurizio Mariani (Italy)

Interestingly, Argentine talisman Lionel Messi has never lost a match officiated by Elfath. As England seeks to reach their first World Cup final in 60 years, Thomas Tuchel’s men will have to break that streak while navigating FIFA’s brand-new on-site VAR setup.
