OYO ABDUCTION: Security forces rescue pupils, teachers after 56 days in captivity

A grueling 56-day captivity nightmare has finally ended for the school children and teachers abducted from the Oriire community in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, following a successful rescue operation by Nigeria’s joint security forces.

The victims, who had been held by terrorists for nearly two months, were freed during a high-stakes, intelligence-driven operation involving the military, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigerian Police Force.

According to official details released on Friday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the operation was executed with precision, securing the total release of the pupils and teachers without any collateral damage. During the fierce crackdown, security operatives neutralized several of the terrorists and successfully arrested eight members of the kidnapping syndicate.

The successful mission brings an end to over 50 days of a tense standoff that had thrown the local community and the entire nation into deep anxiety.

While the rescue operation is being hailed as a major victory, it was marred by the tragic revelation that a local resident, Mr. Oyedokun, was gruesomely murdered by the terrorists during the saga.

Reacting to the successful operation, President Bola Tinubu praised the heroic efforts of the security forces for working round the clock to secure the victims’ release. He also acknowledged the deep anguish the families had endured during the siege and vowed that the government would ensure full justice is served, particularly for the family of the slain Mr. Oyedokun.

“This successful military operation has ended the siege and standoff of over 50 days and has brought relief to the entire nation and the affected families in particular,” Tinubu stated, adding that the eight arrested suspects will face the full weight of the law.

Following their liberation, the president directed federal emergency agencies to immediately collaborate with the Oyo State Government to provide comprehensive medical attention and psychosocial relief to the traumatized children and teachers.

The presidency further commended the Oyo State government for its seamless cooperation during the 56-day ordeal and tasked the state authorities to immediately fortify security protocols around all schools across the state to prevent a reoccurrence of such mass abductions.
