2026 WORLD CUP: Resolute Black Stars hold England to gritty scoreless draw

England’s high-flying momentum was brought to a screeching halt on Tuesday as a tactically disciplined Ghana side frustrated the Three Lions to secure a hard-fought 0-0 draw in their second World Cup Group L clash.

The result leaves both nations well-positioned to advance to the knockout stages. However, it represents a reality check for Thomas Tuchel’s men, who were riding high after a thrilling 4-2 victory over Croatia in their tournament opener.

Ghana, buoyed by their dramatic, last-gasp 1-0 win over Panama in their first match, made their tactical blueprint clear from the very first whistle: sit deep, suffocate space, and blunt England’s multi-million-pound attack.

Total dominance, zero penetration

Under a persistent drizzle at the home of the NFL’s New England Patriots near Boston, England dominated the ball, commanding nearly 80% of possession in a sluggish first half.

Yet, for all their sterile passing, the Three Lions were choked out in the final third. Every time England captain Harry Kane or his supporting cast ventured into dangerous territory, they were instantly swarmed by a disciplined wall of Black Stars.

In a telling statistic, the opening 45 minutes marked the first time at this World Cup that a first half concluded without either side registering a single shot on target. In fact, the loudest roar from the damp crowd came when the stadium’s giant screens showed former England captain David Beckham watching from the VIP suites.

Before the match, Tuchel had warned that Ghana would be meticulously drilled by their veteran strategist, Carlos Queiroz—the former Manchester United assistant manager currently coaching at his fifth World Cup. Tuchel’s predictions proved entirely accurate.

“Deep, deep, deep”

Speaking at the interval, England assistant coach Anthony Barry admitted the African powerhouse had thrown a tactical curveball.

“Ghana are defending deep, deep, deep—probably deeper than we expected. We need to remain patient,” Barry noted.

As the second half wore on with no breakthrough, Tuchel turned to his bench, unleashing a wave of attacking talent. Bukayo Saka and Nico O’Reilly were introduced in the 65th minute, followed shortly by Morgan Rogers, Eberechi Eze, and finally, Marcus Rashford.

Despite the onslaught, Ghana remained incredibly dangerous on the counter-attack, using the blistering pace of Antoine Semenyo and substitute Prince Kwabena Adu to keep the English backline honest.

Late drama and late regrets

England’s golden opportunity to snatch all three points finally arrived in the 86th minute. Youngster Nico O’Reilly rose highest to plant a header against the crossbar, only for the rebound to fall perfectly to Harry Kane. Uncharacteristically, the Bayern Munich striker blasted the ball over the woodwork from close range.

Reflecting on the miss after the game, a frustrated Kane said:

“I just couldn’t quite get over the ball. But, yeah, I’m backing myself to score that more often than not. So, it is what it is. I’ve been a striker long enough to know they don’t always go in, so I have to accept it.”

Queiroz hails Black Stars’ discipline

In contrast, Ghana boss Carlos Queiroz was full of praise for his team’s defensive masterclass.

“I am so proud of the way our players fought during the game, and how much they stood behind the game plan,” the Portuguese tactician said.

Intriguingly, the stalemate continues a bizarre modern curse for England; this is now the fourth consecutive major tournament (spanning two European Championships and two World Cups) where they have failed to win their second group stage match.

In the group’s other fixture, Croatia and Panama—both desperate for their first points of the campaign—are set to clash later on Tuesday.

How Group L stands:

Team Played Points
England 2 4
Ghana 2 4
Croatia 1 0
Panama 1 0
