PDP’s Olaka Nwogu wins Rivers Southeast senatorial by-election
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Senator Olaka Nwogu, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the winner of Saturday’s Rivers Southeast senatorial district by-election.
The Returning Officer for the election, Rosemary Ogu, announced the results, stating that Nwogu polled 47,961 votes to clear the polls, which featured candidates from four political parties.

According to the official breakdown announced by the electoral umpire, Osarosaka Ebenezer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) came a distant second with 1,647 votes. Douglas Beke Fabeke of the Action Alliance (AA) secured 1,175 votes, while Sam Bariboa of the Labour Party (LP) garnered 367 votes.
Interestingly, all four political parties and their respective candidates involved in the contest are members of the “Rainbow Coalition”—a political alliance engineered by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Senator-elect Nwogu is set to fill the red chamber seat left vacant by Senator Barinada Mpigi, who passed away in office on February 19, 2026.
