INEC declares APC’s Dayo Faduyile winner of Ondo South senatorial by-election
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Professor Dayo Faduyile, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the Ondo South Senatorial district by-election held on Saturday.
Faduyile, a prominent pathologist and former National President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), was officially returned elected in the early hours of Sunday.
Sweeping the polls
The INEC Returning Officer for the by-election, Professor Gbenga Ibileye, announced the final results at the collation center situated at Stella Maris College in Okitipupa.
According to Ibileye, Faduyile secured a landslide victory by polling a total of 68,474 votes, dominating the exercise across all six Local Government Areas (LGAs) within the senatorial district: Okitipupa, Ilaje, Ese-Odo, Irele, Odigbo, and Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo.

The runner-up, Engineer Akinwunmi Adeolu Harrison of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), managed a distant 1,411 votes. Other contestants included Adesanya Olaoluwa of the Action Peoples Party (APP), who garnered 213 votes, and Nejo Funso Clement of the Boot Party (BP), who recorded 70 votes.
“That Faduyile Francis Adedayo of APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner, and he is returned elected,” Professor Ibileye announced.
Why the by-election?
The Ondo South Senatorial seat became vacant following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s appointment of the previous lawmaker, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
