2027: Gwarzo picks Kwankwaso’s son, Mustapha, as running mate for Kano gov race
Ahead of the high-stakes 2027 governorship election in Kano State, the candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has officially chosen Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate.
The decision was announced on Monday in a statement signed by Habeeb Saleh Mohammed, the spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya movement.

“Hon. Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has been unveiled as the running mate to HE Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo for the 2027 governorship election,” the statement read.
The choice of Mustapha Kwankwaso injects a familiar dynamic into the upcoming Kano race. He is the son of the national leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement and former Kano State governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who is widely regarded as Gwarzo’s political godfather.
Mustapha Kwankwaso previously served as the Commissioner of Youth and Sports in the current administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, before he was relieved of his duties during a cabinet reshuffle after the governor parted ways with the senior Kwankwaso.
Political analysts in the state view this ticket as a deliberate strategy by the NDC to consolidate and secure the fierce loyalty of the Kwankwasiyya political structure as the battle for the Kano Government House heats up for 2027.
