Ageless Serena Williams sparks frenzy at Queen’s Club with triumphant tennis comeback
Tennis icon Serena Williams made a sensational and triumphant return to competitive tennis on Tuesday night, rolling back the years with a commanding doubles victory at the Queen’s Club after a staggering 1,375-day absence from the sport.
The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion thrilled a packed, high-energy crowd at the Andy Murray Arena. Partnering with 19-year-old Canadian sensation Victoria Mboko, the duo pulled off a stunning 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 victory against third seeds Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez.
The victory marks Williams’ first competitive success since her emotional farewell at the 2022 US Open, where she seemingly brought down the curtain on one of the greatest careers in sporting history.

“I Got Tiredgot tired of Sittingsitting at Homehome” — Serena
Instead of looking like a retired athlete, the 44-year-old produced a masterclass performance that proved she still has plenty of fire left in the tank. Speaking on court after the match, a beaming Williams expressed her delight.
“It was so fun. I had so much fun playing with Victoria,” Williams said. “She really held up the team and played big on the big points. I could rely on her. We have never played together, but it felt so natural.”
When quizzed about what inspired her to pick up the racket again after nearly four years away, Williams flashed her characteristic humour:
- “I had nothing better to do. I got tired of sitting at home,” she joked.
- “My kids are out of school for the summer, so why not?”
- “I never got to play here; it was always just the men. It feels really special to play somewhere so iconic.”
The atmosphere at Queen’s Club was electric, with every seat filled by fans desperate to witness history. While anticipation had been building for a year—fueled by Williams re-entering the anti-doping testing pool—her official partnership with Mboko was only confirmed last week.
The match didn’t start flawlessly. There were early signs of rust when Williams’ opening volley crashed straight into the net, briefly raising doubts about whether the former World No. 1 could still cut it at the highest level.
As the game progressed, Williams’ legendary court presence and raw power took over. Her thunderous serve proved to be the ultimate weapon, allowing her and Mboko to seize complete control and cruise across the finish line.
A family affair
Before the tournament, Williams insisted she had “nothing to prove,” revealing that her biggest motivation was simply letting her children see her play.
Her daughters—eight-year-old Olympia and three-year-old Adira—were spotted cheering enthusiastically from the stands alongside their father, Alexis Ohanian, witnessing firsthand the brilliance that defined their mother’s legendary career.
Ninety-two minutes after stepping back onto the court, Serena Williams secured her fairytale comeback, leaving the tennis world with a loud and clear reminder of why she remains the Undisputed Greatest of All Time (GOAT).
