Cash, Pride, Goals: Why Nigerian fans shouldn’t miss England vs France tonight
England and France will face off this Saturday in the World Cup’s most bittersweet fixture—the third-place play-off—as both European giants look to dust themselves down following devastating semi-final exits.
Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions collapsed in the dying minutes of their semi-final clash against Argentina, where late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez ended English dreams of reaching a second consecutive World Cup final.
Meanwhile, pre-tournament favourites France were thoroughly dismantled by reigning European champions Spain—a result that shocked pundits given Les Bleus’ otherwise imperious form in recent weeks.

Now, both teams must fight for pride, a bronze medal, and a significant financial boost in what FIFA officially brands the “bronze final.”
While the third-place play-off is often criticized as an unnecessary fixture, history shows it rarely delivers a boring game.
Statistically, these matches are usually high-scoring affairs. In fact, since Poland’s narrow 1-0 victory over Brazil in 1974, every single World Cup third-place play-off has featured two or more goals.
Both nations have a mixed history with this fixture.
France: Making their fourth appearance. They secured bronze in 1958 (vs. West Germany) and 1986 (vs. Belgium) but lost to Poland in 1982.
England: Making their third appearance. History is heavily against them, having lost both of their previous bronze finals—falling 2-1 to hosts Italy in 1990 and 2-0 to Belgium in 2018.
Aside from national pride, there is a massive financial incentive to winning on Saturday. The difference between finishing third and fourth comes down to a cool $2 million (approx. ₦3.2 billion).
Here is how FIFA will distribute the prize money to the final four teams:
Winners: $51m (£38m)
Runners-up: $34m (£25m)
3rd place: $30m (£22m)
4th place: $28m (£20m)
At Qatar 2022, Croatia claimed the bronze medal after a thrilling 2-1 victory over history-making African giants Morocco.
Reflecting on the achievement at the time, Croatia manager Zlatko Dalic highlighted just how much the match means to the players.
“We won the bronze medal and it has a golden layer, it is like we have won the gold medal tonight,” Dalic said. “Fighting for the third-place play-off and losing would have been a disaster.”
Past Third-Place Winners (Last 20 Years):
2022: Croatia 2-1 Morocco
2018: Belgium 2-0 England
2014: Netherlands 3-0 Brazil
2010: Germany 3-2 Uruguay
2006: Germany 3-1 Portugal
2002: Turkey 3-2 South Korea
Can Tuchel break England’s third-place curse, or will Kylian Mbappé and France go home with the bronze?
