Chris Brown detained after court appearance in London nightclub assault case
American Grammy-winning singer, Chris Brown, has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged over an alleged bottle attack at a London nightclub.
The charges against him include causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) related to an alleged attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at the Tape nightclub in February 2023.
This incident reportedly involved Brown striking Diaw multiple times with a bottle and subsequently kicking and punching him, actions that were captured on surveillance footage.
Court proceedings
On Friday, Brown appeared before Manchester Magistrates’ Court where he was denied bail by Judge Joanne Hirst. The prosecution described the attack as “extremely serious,” emphasizing that it was unprovoked and occurred in a crowded venue.
Prosecutor Hannah Nicholls detailed how Brown allegedly used a tequila bottle to inflict injuries on Diaw, who later filed a civil lawsuit seeking $16 million for damages related to the assault.
During the court hearing, Brown confirmed his identity but did not enter a plea. His case has been transferred to Southwark Crown Court in London, where he is scheduled for a plea and trial preparation hearing on June 13, 2025.

This date is particularly significant as it coincides with one of his scheduled performances in Frankfurt, Germany, raising concerns about the future of his upcoming tour.
Brown’s legal troubles have cast doubt over his planned international tour titled “Breezy Bowl XX,” which is set to kick off on June 8 in Amsterdam. Following this European leg, he is expected to continue touring North America starting July 30. The situation remains fluid as further developments unfold regarding both his legal standing and tour commitments.
Additional charges
In connection with the same incident at the Tape nightclub, another individual named Omololu Akinlolu (known as HoodyBaby) has also been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent. He is expected to appear in court shortly after Brown’s next hearing.
Fans support
Reports say fans gathered outside Manchester Magistrates’ Court ahead of the hearing.
One fan, who lives in Manchester, told the BBC she had cancelled her plans so she could spend the day outside court.
Candy, 35, said she has followed the star since she was 14 and when she heard the news of his arrest she could not sleep.
“I’m just here to support him,” she said, adding that “I love his music, his voice. Even my children are fans now.”
