Egypt FA demands FIFA expel World Cup referees after ‘controversial’ 3-2 loss to Argentina
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has launched a furious protest against world football governing body, FIFA, demanding the immediate expulsion of match officials involved in Egypt’s dramatic 3-2 Round of 16 defeat to reigning champions Argentina at the ongoing 2026 World Cup.
In what has been described as one of the most thrilling yet controversial matches of the tournament so far, Egypt looked set to pull off one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history after taking a shocking 2-0 lead against Argentina.
However, the South American giants staged a dramatic comeback, with goals from Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi, and a 93rd-minute winner from Enzo Fernandez booking Argentina’s spot in the quarter-finals against Switzerland.
Flashpoints and VAR drama
The Pharaohs’ camp was left infuriated by a series of refereeing decisions led by French match referee François Letexier.
Egypt saw a goal by Mostafa Zico chalked off by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) due to an alleged foul at the start of the build-up play.
In the dying seconds of the match, Egypt claimed star forward Mohamed Salah was fouled inside the Argentine penalty box. The referee waved play on, and just seconds later, Argentina counter-attacked to score their stoppage-time winner.

The immediate aftermath of the final whistle saw chaotic scenes as furious Egyptian players and coaching staff stormed the pitch to confront Letexier. The French referee responded by flashing multiple yellow and red cards at the Egyptian bench.
Post-match, Egypt manager Hossam Hassan and goalscorer Zico did not mince words, openly labelling the officiating as “unfair” and “fixed.”
“We cannot remain silent” – EFA statement
Breaking its silence on the incident, the EFA released an official statement condemning the officiating and the perceived double standards in the deployment of VAR.
“The Egyptian Football Association cannot remain silent regarding the refereeing decisions witnessed during the match against Argentina as well as the failure to make appropriate use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system,” the statement read.
“Several key incidents raised serious concerns and left profound questions about the consistency and fairness of decisions that directly influenced the course of the game… What occurred during the match has understandably generated widespread frustration among our players, staff, and supporters, who expected the highest standards of officiating on football’s biggest stage.”
Demands for ban and allegations of discrimination
In a secondary, escalation statement, the EFA confirmed that its president, Hany Abou Rida, has filed a formal complaint with FIFA. The Egyptian football governing body is demanding a full-scale investigation and the outright expulsion of Letexier and his officiating crew from the remainder of the 2026 World Cup.
The federation cited “blatant errors and insisting on not reviewing some of the footage,” further escalating their rhetoric by alleging a “crime of discrimination against the Egyptian national team.”
FIFA has yet to issue an official response to the EFA’s formal complaint.
