WORLD CUP DRAMA: Belgium mock Donald Trump after thrashing US 4-1

The ongoing World Cup has taken a dramatic political twist as Belgium’s national football team clinical dismantled the United States 4-1 in Seattle, before aiming a series of brutal, coordinated digs at US President Donald Trump.

The clinical victory on the pitch has now been overshadowed by an escalating war of words involving FIFA President Gianni Infantino, European football governing body UEFA, and the White House.

Rudi Garcia’s men booked their place in the World Cup quarter-finals in spectacular fashion. A brilliant brace from Charles De Ketelaere, a strike from Hans Vanaken, and a late stoppage-time goal from veteran striker Romelu Lukaku sealed a resounding 4-1 victory for the Red Devils.

However, it was the explosive political drama ahead of kick-off that set the stage for a fiery encounter.

Trump’s interference and FIFA’s ‘red line’

The tension began days before the match when FIFA made the unprecedented decision to suspend a one-match ban handed to US forward Folarin Balogun, who had been sent off during America’s 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The ruling sparked immediate outrage.

UEFA slammed FIFA for “crossing a red line,” calling the decision “incomprehensible and unjustifiable.”

The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) expressed deep astonishment and launched an urgent appeal, which was swiftly thrown out by FIFA’s Appeals Committee.

The plot thickened when US President Donald Trump boasted during a White House speech that he personally intervened, calling FIFA President Gianni Infantino to demand the red card be reviewed. “I was the one that got them to do it,” Trump claimed.

Belgium’s “brutal” two-fold response

Having been denied justice in the boardroom, the Belgians took matters into their own hands on the pitch and on social media.

After Romelu Lukaku netted Belgium’s fourth goal in stoppage time, members of the squad gathered to perform a synchronized dance routine. The celebration was a direct, mocking imitation of President Trump’s signature campaign dance to the song “Y.M.C.A.”

Immediately after the final whistle, Belgium’s official X account (@BelRedDevils) posted a picture of Lukaku celebrating, accompanied by the pointed two-word caption: “Overturn this.”

Infantino responds amid growing backlash

As the fallout intensifies, FIFA President Gianni Infantino broke his silence, releasing a statement via UEFA’s official channels to defend the organization’s integrity while confirming he did indeed speak with the US President.

“Yes, I regularly discuss matters related to the FIFA World Cup with the President of the United States, and on this matter, I did receive a call from President Donald Trump,” Infantino admitted.

“During our conversation, I explained that there was an ongoing legal process involving FIFA’s independent judicial bodies… That is how FIFA’s system works.”

Infantino maintained that FIFA’s judicial bodies operate with total autonomy, adding a subtle nod to the controversy: “I read the decisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee when they are issued. Sometimes I am surprised by them. Sometimes I agree with them, and sometimes I disagree. What I always do, however, is respect those decisions.”

With Belgium safely through to the quarter-finals and the US knocked out, the tournament marches on—but the intersection of football, independent governance, and geopolitical influence is bound to dominate headlines for days to come.
