WORLD CUP SABOTAGE? Belgium, UEFA fume at FIFA over Balogun twist

The ongoing FIFA World Cup has been plunged into an unprecedented regulatory crisis just 24 hours before the crucial Round of 16 clash between Belgium and the United States.

The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) has launched a blistering attack on world football governing body FIFA, releasing a scathing second statement that accuses the organization of deliberate obstruction and lack of transparency.

The uproar follows FIFA’s shock decision to suspend a mandatory one-match ban handed to USA star forward Folarin Balogun, making him eligible to face the Red Devils in Seattle on Tuesday, July 7.

Genesis of the controversy

Folarin Balogun, who has been sensational for Mauricio Pochettino’s side with three goals and three assists in the tournament, was sent off on July 2 during the USA’s 2-0 victory over Bosnia at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.

A straight red card for a challenge on Tarik Muharemović meant an automatic one-match suspension, ruling him out of the Belgium showdown. However, in a twist that has shocked the footballing world, FIFA invoked Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code to put the ban on hold for a 12-month probationary period.

In a statement released on Sunday, July 5, FIFA stated:

“In line with Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year. If Folarin Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be revoked and the sanction enforced…”

The ‘Trump factor’ sparks outrage

The decision has been heavily controversial, amid reports that political heavyweight Donald Trump personally intervened. According to The Guardian, Trump made three separate phone calls to FIFA President Gianni Infantino to advocate for the American forward.

Following the ruling, Trump took to his Truth Social account to celebrate, writing:

“Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right and reversing a great injustice! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

Belgium Slams FIFA’s “deliberate” obstruction

On Monday, July 6, the RBFA fired back with a detailed and furious second statement, alleging that FIFA actively sabotaged their right to a fair legal process.

According to the Belgian FA, FIFA treated their initial request for information as an official appeal, gave them a window of just a few hours to complete it without providing any case files, and then threw it out as “inadmissible.”

Key allegations raised by the RBFA include that FIFA has allegedly refused to provide the RBFA with a copy of the official decision or any explanation regarding the legal process followed.

The RBFA claims FIFA created an artificial appeal timeline to ensure it would be declared inadmissible before Belgium could even read the reasoned decision.

The Belgian FA revealed that during the official match coordination meeting, FIFA deliberately deleted the standard section concerning suspended players from its presentation—a topic present in all previous matches.

The RBFA concluded its fiery statement by vowing to fight on:

“To be clear, as of this moment, the RBFA has still not received any decision or any explanation from FIFA regarding this matter. It therefore has no alternative but to challenge the player’s eligibility for the upcoming match. Regardless of the sporting outcome… the RBFA is deeply concerned by the course of events and will continue to fight in the coming hours, days and months.”

UEFA Intervenes: “A red line has been crossed”

European football’s governing body, UEFA, has thrown its full weight behind Belgium, releasing an extraordinary statement that accuses FIFA of undermining the entire integrity of the World Cup.

UEFA argued that an automatic red-card suspension is not a discretionary option and cannot be waved away in the middle of a tournament.

“Yesterday’s decision… crossed a red line,” UEFA’s statement read. “When the certainty of rules is no longer guaranteed by its guardians, the integrity of the game is at stake and the credibility of a competition is undermined… We express our disbelief at such an unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision.”

With the legal battle set to spill over long after the final whistle, the immediate focus shifts to the pitch. If the United States manages to defeat Belgium in Seattle tomorrow with Balogun leading the line, they will advance to the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2002. However, any American victory will now permanently carry a massive asterisk.
