CATHOLIC CHURCH: Interim ‘Pope’ takes charge
Following the death of Pope Francis on Monday, the Vatican has announced that Cardinal Kevin Farrell stepped in as the interim head of the Catholic Church, marking the beginning of the interregnum—the period between the death of a pope and the election of his successor.
The Catholic Church has entered a period known as “sede vacante,” which translates to “the seat being vacant.”
During this time, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who holds the title of Camerlengo (Chamberlain) of the Holy Roman Church, assumes temporary leadership of the Vatican and its administrative functions until a new pope is elected. This transition is critical for maintaining continuity within the Church during this interregnum.

As Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, Cardinal Farrell now oversees the day-to-day administration of the Vatican.
In this vital role, he is tasked with ensuring the continued functioning of the Apostolic See until the College of Cardinals convenes in a conclave to elect a new pope.
Cardinal Farrell, 77, is a seasoned Church leader with decades of experience.
Born in Dublin, Ireland, and now a naturalized U.S. citizen, he previously served as the Bishop of Dallas before being appointed to key roles within the Vatican.
He is also academically accomplished, holding a Master of Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame.
The Camerlengo’s responsibilities are significant during this transitional phase.
Cardinal Farrell’s first official act was to announce Pope Francis’ death publicly from the chapel of Domus Sanctae Marthae, where Francis had been residing.
Following this announcement, he oversaw the sealing of the papal apartments to signify the end of Francis’ pontificate and to prevent any potential looting or unauthorized access.
As Camerlengo, Farrell is tasked with several key duties:
He must officially certify the death of the pope and communicate it to both the public and church officials.
He must physically seal off areas associated with the late pope.
The Camerlengo is required to destroy the Fisherman’s Ring and lead bulla used as a signet, which symbolizes that there is no longer an active pope.
He oversees all arrangements for Pope Francis’ funeral, ensuring that it adheres to church traditions while also respecting any specific wishes expressed by Francis prior to his death.
Farrell will organize and prepare for the upcoming conclave where cardinals will gather to elect a new pope.
