Doctor sentenced to life for murdering 15 palliative care patients

A 41-year-old German palliative care doctor, identified as Johannes M., has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of murdering 15 of his patients.

A Berlin court convicted Dr. Johannes for the murders of 12 women and three men, crimes committed between September 2021 and July 2024.

‘I wanted to save them from suffering’

During his trial last month, the doctor confessed to the killings, offering a chilling justification for his actions. He told the court that he killed his patients to save them from “suffering and infirmity.”

“Throughout it all, I thought this was the best thing for everyone,” Dr. Johannes stated during his testimony.

According to the prosecution, the doctor secretly administered lethal doses of sedatives and a cocktail of various medications to the vulnerable patients without their consent.

In a desperate bid to conceal his crimes, Dr. Johannes frequently set fires to the victims’ properties after killing them. Investigators revealed that his deadly spree culminated in July 2024, when he killed two patients on the same day.

While delivering the judgment on Wednesday, Presiding Judge Sylvia Busch indicated that the conviction for these 15 murders might only be the tip of the iceberg, suggesting it could unearth further undetected crimes committed by the physician.

Prosecutors have confirmed that they are actively investigating several other suspicious cases involving the doctor to determine if there are additional victims.
