Kano bars Sheikh Lawal Triumph from preaching over blasphemy allegations
The Kano State government has suspended Islamic cleric Sheikh Lawal Abubakar Triumph (also known as Sheikh Lawan Triumph or Sheikh Lawal Shuaib Abubakar) from all teaching and preaching activities.
This suspension follows allegations of blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad in his preachings.
The decision was announced by the Kano State Shura Council, the government’s religious advisory body, through its secretary, Shehu Wada-Sagagi.
The suspension is temporary, pending an investigation into the allegations and to allow Sheikh Triumph to appear before the council to defend himself.
The Shura Council, which regulates religious preachings in the state, reviewed audio and video clips containing the alleged derogatory statements. They documented verifiable evidence while setting aside unsubstantiated claims.

Allegations against Sheikh Triumph reportedly include making offensive comments about Prophet Muhammad (SAW), questioning aspects of his birth story, and some claimed special gifts.
The council has urged politicians not to interfere in the matter to ensure fairness and justice.
This is not the first instance of a cleric facing scrutiny over blasphemy allegations in Kano.
In 2021, Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru-Kabara was charged and convicted over issues bordering on blasphemy.
