Kwara 2027: Gov. AbdulRazaq backs Yahaya Seriki as preferred APC successor ahead of primaries
Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has officially endorsed Ambassador Abdulfatai Yahaya Seriki (MFR) as his preferred successor under the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform.
The governor made the high-stakes announcement via his official social media handle on Tuesday, shaking up the political landscape just days before the party’s scheduled gubernatorial primaries on Thursday, May 21, 2026.
According to AbdulRazaq, the decision to back Seriki followed “extensive consultations with party structures and leadership” across the state.
Describing the Ambassador as a vibrant and well-connected grassroots politician, the Governor expressed absolute confidence in Seriki’s leadership credentials.
“Young, pro-people, astute, and broad-minded, Amb. Yahaya Seriki has been a great political mobiliser with profound investments in and extensive goodwill among the people of Kwara State,” AbdulRazaq stated. “I have no doubt about his capacity and that his choice is appropriate for the people of our state at this time.”

The endorsement comes at a critical time as 16 aspirants battle for the APC governorship ticket. While the Governor’s nod gives Seriki a major advantage, AbdulRazaq clarified that his decision does not mean other contenders have been disqualified or shut out of the race.
“While this does not in any way preclude all other aspirants from contesting in the primaries, I urge members and leaders to affirm the choice of Seriki as our candidate for cohesion, unity, and continuous success of the party,” he added.
Defending the choice against potential backlash from rival camps, the Governor maintained that picking Seriki was a necessary strategic move to ensure party stability, rather than a slight against other qualified candidates.
“The choice of Amb. Yahaya Seriki is neither a disapproval of any of our eminently qualified aspirants nor a whimsical attempt to delegitimise the noble aspirations of our people. But in a race involving some 16 great minds for one office, only one person can take the shot at a time,” he explained.
Governor AbdulRazaq concluded by praising the other 15 aspirants for their discipline and statesmanship, noting that they have all demonstrated the capacity to sustain the developmental track record of his administration over the past seven years.
With the APC gubernatorial primaries set for Thursday, political observers are watching closely to see how the Governor’s endorsement will influence delegates in what promises to be a highly anticipated internal party transition.
