Insurgency survivor Bintu Konto named LP 2027 vice presidential candidate
The Labour Party (LP) has officially unveiled Hajia Bintu Konto as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, reaffirming its confidence in its presidential ticket ahead of the upcoming political contest.
The unveiling took place during an interactive session at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, bringing together members of the National Working Committee and LP presidential candidate, Dr. Chibuzo Sunday Okereke.
Speaking at the event, the national chairman of the party, Senator Nenadi Usman, stated that Konto’s selection reflects the Labour Party’s commitment to equity, social justice, and inclusive governance.

According to Usman, picking a female running mate aligns directly with the party’s “Mama, Papa, Pikin” philosophy, demonstrating a genuine belief in equal political opportunities for all Nigerians.
“Hajia Bintu Konto brings intimidating credentials and extensive humanitarian experience to this ticket,” Usman noted, adding that her background makes her well-suited to drive impactful governance alongside Okereke.
Usman also highlighted the performance of Abia State governor, Dr. Alex Otti, pointing to his administration as a practical baseline for what Labour Party leadership represents. She specifically cited Abia’s social welfare policies for senior citizens as concrete proof of people-centered governance, calling on Nigerians to back the party in future elections.
‘Clapping with one hand’
In his address, presidential candidate Dr. Chibuzo Sunday Okereke expressed enthusiasm over his pairing with Konto, describing her as a battle-tested and reliable partner.
Emphasizing the vital role of women in national development, Okereke remarked that side-lining women from active governance is equivalent to “attempting to clap with one hand.” He added that Konto’s long-standing public health advocacy and humanitarian work across northern Nigeria would strengthen their shared vision for national renewal.
Accepting the nomination, Konto thanked the party leadership for the opportunity and pledged total commitment to public service if elected.
Reflecting on her past work, Konto shared her experiences leading humanitarian interventions during the height of the Boko Haram insurgency in northern Nigeria—a cause she stayed committed to even after losing her husband to the conflict.
She stated that her grassroots experience working with vulnerable populations would directly shape her approach to tackling insecurity and creating welfare-focused policies. Konto added that she joined the Labour Party because it offers the clear roadmap needed to solve Nigeria’s leadership challenges.
The unveiling comes as political parties across the country accelerate strategic preparations for the 2027 general election.
