Shekarau’s LND initiates formation of new political party
The League of Northern Democrats (LND), under the leadership of Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, is in the process of transforming itself into a political party ahead of the 2027 elections in Nigeria.
This initiative comes as a response to what they perceive as failures by the current ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The LND has expressed its commitment to addressing significant issues facing Nigeria, such as endemic poverty, insecurity, inequality, institutional decay, corruption, and socio-economic stagnation. These challenges are attributed to poor governance over the years.
Coalition
In addition to forming a political party, the LND has established a coalition with other influential northern groups including the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Northern Elders Forum (NEF), and Middle Belt Forum (MBF).

This coalition aims to unify northern Nigeria’s political landscape and address pressing regional challenges. The coalition was formalized during a meeting in Kaduna where leaders from these organizations convened to discuss their shared vision for Northern Nigeria.
Senator Shekarau emphasized that this coalition represents not just an immediate political strategy but also a long-term commitment to restoring Northern Nigeria’s status as a key player in national politics. He articulated that this unity would compel existing political entities like APC and PDP to recognize and align with their vision for progress.
Goals and objectives
The primary goals of this newly formed coalition include amplifying the collective voice of Northern Nigeria in national discourse, pooling resources for impactful solutions to shared challenges, and fostering an environment conducive to trust and collaboration among various stakeholders.
The leaders involved have expressed optimism that through cooperation and strategic planning, they can effectively tackle issues such as poverty, illiteracy, religious intolerance, disunity, and diminishing political influence.
As they move forward with their plans for transformation into a political party and solidifying their coalition efforts, the LND aims not only to participate in upcoming elections but also to reshape governance in Nigeria by advocating for democratic values and institutional renewal.
