Kano Correspondents’ Chapel reels out 1-year scorecard, disburses over ₦8.5m revolving fund
The Kano State Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has released a comprehensive one-year stewardship report detailing the milestone achievements and innovations introduced by the administration of its chairman, Alhaji Murtala Adewale.
The stewardship report highlights a deliberate policy focus on prioritizing members’ welfare, professional capacity building, institutional recognition, and financial empowerment. The executive team also noted significant strides in elevating the visibility and strategic relevance of the Chapel within Kano State and beyond.
Major achievements & financial interventions
A significant portion of the administration’s impact over the last twelve months centered on substantial financial relief, empowerment schemes, and social interventions for chapel members.
The administration reported the distribution of direct welfare assistance of N50,000 each to 10 selected members, totaling N500,000. Additionally, it secured a monthly special gesture allowance of N30,000 to all members, aside the usually N30,000 that has been in place for long.

To aid personal and professional development, the executive secured and disbursed N8.5 million in interest-free or supportive loan facilities to members, with some members getting as much as N3 million.
The leadership executed a N2.5 million Ramadan food distribution drive. A critical N2 million medical intervention fund was also provided to assist a member facing health challenges.
The Chapel said it successfully facilitated the allocation of two Hajj slots to its members to perform the holy pilgrimage.
Key innovations and infrastructure
Under Alhaji Murtala Adewale’s leadership, several core structural reforms and modern initiatives were successfully integrated into the daily operations of the chapel:
For instance, to guarantee long-term financial stability, a Cooperative Society was launched with an initial capital base of N10million.
The administration sponsored an all-expenses-paid four-day strategic retreat in Kaduna for team-bonding and capacity building. It also introduced a “Tea Break Platform” to boost professional networking.
A “Distinguished Award of Excellence” initiative was created to honor past leaders, veteran journalists, and outstanding members of the chapel.
The secretariat received a recreation boost with the procurement of an Olympic-standard table tennis board.
The administration successfully deployed unlimited 5G internet services and a premium DSTV subscription for the chapel secretariat, ensuring both are sustained via monthly renewals. Furthermore, it reactivated the chapel’s bank account for financial transparency, hired a dedicated cleaner, created an active Facebook page for media relations, and ensured full provisioning of tea, garri, and assorted refreshments for members at the office.
The scorecard marks a transformative 365 days for the working journalists in Kano, showing a deliberate shift toward modern welfare delivery and collaborative professional growth.
