NBA unveils “Smart ID Card” to modernize professional identity for Nigerian Lawyers
The president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe, SAN, has announced the rollout of the NBA Smart Identity Card in a strategic move to digitize the legal profession and curb the menace of “fake lawyers,”
The initiative is designed to serve as a secure, verifiable credential that affirms the status of legal practitioners across the country.
According to Osigwe, the card is intended to simplify identification at courts, financial institutions, and official engagements while enhancing the professional image of Nigerian lawyers.
In a statement released to members, the NBA president emphasized that the evolving legal landscape requires more robust verification tools.
”The NBA Smart ID Card is more than just an identification tool,” Osigwe stated. “It is a forward-looking initiative designed to strengthen the professional standing of every Nigerian lawyer, positioning you for seamless recognition and trust.”
The NBA has structured the rollout to support the growth of the junior bar while ensuring a sustainable transition for all members:
Young lawyers (0–7 years post-call) are eligible to receive the Smart ID Card free of charge, while senior lawyers (7+ years post-call) are equired to pay a processing fee to the designated service provider.
According to him, the card will facilitate easier access to courts, conferences, and engagement with government agencies.
Application process and technical notice
The NBA has launched a dedicated portal for the application process. Members are encouraged to apply via the official link: https://nba.alphacards.dev.
The association issued a specific notice to those who were early adopters of the system. Applicants who submitted their details on April 22nd and 23rd may be required to reconfirm their applications via the portal to ensure their data is correctly captured in the new system.
A “smarter” bar
This initiative marks a significant step in the NBA’s push for a more secure and technologically integrated Bar.
