Tinubu taps ex-Ambassador Yusuf to lead NAHCON

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf to serve as the new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).

The announcement was made on Wednesday in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The President has formally communicated the nomination to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, requesting a swift confirmation process. The appointment is in line with Section 3(2) of the NAHCON Act, 2006, which mandates legislative approval for the commission’s leadership.

Ambassador Yusuf is set to take over from Professor Abdullahi Usman, who tendered his resignation earlier this week after 14 months at the helm of the agency.

“President Tinubu sent a letter today to the Senate President… requesting the expeditious confirmation of Ambassador Yusuf to replace Professor Abdullahi Usman,” the statement read.

Who is Amb. Ismail Abba Yusuf?

The nominee is described as a veteran of the Nigerian foreign service. A seasoned career diplomat, Yusuf most recently served as the Nigerian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Türkiye from 2021 to 2024.

His appointment comes at a critical time for the commission as it begins preparations for the upcoming Hajj exercise, following a period of leadership transition.
